When the valley turns bone dry, Wait for the thunderclap— the lightning never lies. Old nations fade when new flags unfurl, But only lovers are human in this world. How it went down is no mystery. How it went down is so plain to see. The empty nets, the empty nest, The emptiness is no comfort to me. Ghost train creaking on a mud-covered track, Someone is speaking— but I can't answer back. Zeus keeps no tally of the thunderbolts he's hurled, 'Cause he knows only lovers are human in this world. How it went down is no mystery. How it went down is so plain to see. The empty nets, the empty nest, The emptiness is no comfort to me. Only lovers are human in this world Only lovers, Only love.

about

For the last several years I have been making albums specifically for release on Bandcamp, especially in the summer months. This one is different, though.

The global pandemic of the Corona Virus has most cruelly blocked musicians from performing their most important duty, which is to help bring people together to enjoy music and to enjoy each other's company while enjoying music. My longing has been overwhelming in these times— to play again with other musicians and once again have the deep sonic conversations that keep our outsider spirits running; but I do know this drought is temporary, and I will wait.

But while we're waiting— here's an album of music I recorded with the hopes that we will all soon get to the other side of this horror show. Since it was dangerous to ask my other favorite Twin Cities musicians to come record with me, I decided to limit the roster of players on Neverwas in the Limbo Lounge to members of my family. My son, Ivan Cunningham, and my wife, Michelle Kinney, were both trapped with me in our house during the summer of 2020— so I, like, you know,... hit them up for recording tracks (since they couldn't exactly run away).

A lot of this music sounds hopeful to me, but if some of it seems sad or dark to you, the listener; please know it is simply because of my longing for the joy playing music into the air for people to breathe in again, without fear.
I know that time will come, insh'allah— and probably will arrive with a hungry vengeance that will be both joyous and formidably rejuvenating for all of us.

We hope you enjoy.
