about

I Fell

The main melody for this song was sung in French by a beautiful girl in a dream I had in 1976. I didn't speak much French at the time, but I wrote down what I could of the music before it evaporated.
Twenty-five years later, I came back to it and wrote and recorded the bulk of this recording, with my good friend Dorothy Scott on background vocals.
Twenty-five years after that, I came back to it and added Michelle Kinney, Greg Schutte, and Adam Svec.
It still makes me feel the same as right after I woke up from the original dream, though.

lyrics

I Fell

The stars she'd saved for seven years to buy a ticket out
were glued to my face for silver tears. She kissed me on the mouth,
and I fell.
I fell back into the snow.
I fell
I fell so slowly that time didn't know.

Drown me in crimson
Drown me in gold
Call my crazy body back in from the cold

Walk my spine with gilded fingers
until you reach the crown
Tuck me in the folds of the gleaming curtains
that make up your wedding gown

When the day burned down to pilot light,
I turned around to face the projector.
Saw a little glass square, some cigar smoke in there, but no one I could call my protector.

And I fell
I fell
I fell
back in the snow

Drown me in crimson
Drown me in gold
Call my crazy body back in from the cold

Walk my spine with gilded fingers
until you reach the crown
Tuck me in the folds of the gleaming curtains
that make up your wedding gown
